netPrize categories–to be presented at GiEN 09 in Mo Bay

Communication, Education, Evangelism (three in each category-$10K, $5K and $3K)

Grand prize-$15K across all three categories.

The hope is that this will stimulate new development for the netAdventist platform, a requirement of the competition is that it be compatible with the netAdventist system)

Also a netAward will be given (Ray Dabrowski speaking now) to those who have been supporters of online ministry and innovative in using technology. This comes from the GC Communications Department. Missed who received and for what…oh well.

Why do the netPrizes have to be developed on the netAdventist system? I can think of several promising ideas but limiting it to that platform, which, as much as I can figure out, is just an adapted version of Joomla/Mambo limits new directions. They’re stifling innovation right out of the gate.

Agreed. I didn’t even know there were two competing systems until I went to GiEN this year. The only thing I can figure out is that the same money that funded netAdventist is the same money behind the prizes for netAdventist development. So of course they want to see their system get promoted and expanded not the “competitor”. For that reason I would expect the innovation to be limited to the platform that they want to see developed.

netAdventist was an adapted Joomla setup, but NA3 is actually completely rewritten using Ruby.

My guess (and yes, I am guessing) is that they need to spur development for a new platform to encourage people to use it instead of other platforms that may have a more established user/developer base. And though it might seem “stifling,” the reality is that “they” really is NA/Zapara so it’s totally expected. Perhaps there are some other deep pockets willing to broaden the deal?

    Bryan–

You’re not suggesting that there might be some politics involved, are you? I can’t imagine that someone would stoop so low as to offer cold hard cash as an incentive to expend some energy on their behalf?

I wonder if “the other side” can come back with an even bigger wad of cash and make this contest interesting? Then watch as some smart high schooler figures out how to code for both platforms and claims top prize in both contests. That would be sweet! :-)
